Restoration Farm is run by husband and wife team Daniel Holmes and Caroline Fanning. Both native Long Islanders, they met in 2002 while apprenticing at the Poughkeepsie Farm Project in Poughkeepsie, NY.  In 2003, Dan returned to Long Island to become the head grower of Sophia Garden in Amityville. Caroline joined him in 2006.  In 2007, they signed a contract with Nassau County to launch Restoration Farm at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The rest is history.

In 2008, Tricia Hardgrove was shopping at the Saturday farm stand. Now she’s Assistant Grower, driving tractors, raising chickens, and keeping bees. Torrential downpours and 100-degree heat couldn’t stop Lesly Steinman from showing up every harvest morning and bringing in the bacon.

Donna Sinetar feels the weight of the farm on her shoulders. If the asparagus are being neglected or the strawberries drowning in weeds, she’s there to steer the ship back on course. Glenn Aldridge is on a mission to turn the farm into an edible paradise, planting grape vines and fruit trees wherever he can find a spare inch of dirt.

LuLu McCue has no time for chitchat. If there are dahlias to be staked or tomatoes to be picked, she’s your woman. Brian McCue regulates whenever Dan and Glenn step out of line. You’d never know he has a soft spot for LuLu’s dahlias.

George Garbarini doesn’t stop until the job is done and the last bean picked—the undisputed King of Beans Steve Cecchini can drop a tractor engine and convert it to electric power with one hand tied behind his back.

Jay Mussman is strong as a mule and considerably less stubborn. He’s ready for anything Dan throws his way.

All those pieces of junk that Dan can’t resist collecting? Denis Lepel will turn them into custom farm treasures.

It’s a good thing tee-off starts at 5am at Hal Schick’s favorite golf course. Even after 18 holes, he’s still ready for a full day’s work.

Dan Holmes is farm handyman, Thursday night pickup coordinator, and babysitter all rolled into one.

Mother-daughter team Arline Garbarini (left) and Susan Fanning (right) are the friendly faces of the Saturday farm stand. Just don’t ask them to point out the bananas.

Farm stand pinch hitter Chris Holmes swoops in whenever Susan or Arline step out. She can also be relied upon to hold a baby.

No weed is safe from the hawk-eye of Diane Lockspeiser, keeper of the herb garden. Tom Mauro, to the end of his days, was on a mission to transform the CSA pickup area from a frontier outpost to something more civilized. Iris next to the day lilies? Okay. Dirt piled up next to the curb? Not okay.

Susan Salem meets and greets CSA members Saturday mornings and brings an artistic flair to each pickup.

Ann Holdgruen meets and greets CSA members Tuesday evenings. Not sure what to do with that daikon? Just ask Ann.

Webmaster and public relations director Adrian Fanning produces media the farm could never afford and reminds Caroline and Dan to wear clean clothes in public. Ada Fanning Holmes wields a shovel like the two-year-old pro that she is.

Not to be outdone by his cousin Ada, Dominic Holdorf wields a rake like the four-year-old pro that he is. Kobi Fanning Holmes can’t believe his dad seeded the buckwheat in the waning of the moon. His mother can’t believe it either.
